Tour 3 of Fez

4 Days

4-day desert trip from Fes itinerary

Day 01 :
Fes – Ifrane / Atlas Mountains – Mezouga / Sahara Desert.

After breakfast, you'll set off early as there is so much to do in three days that memories will last a lifetime.
At 7am in winter or 8am in Morocco's beautiful long summer, your experienced English-speaking driver from Fes Authentic Tours will pick you up from your accommodation after breakfast and drive you up into the heights of the Middle Atlas as Fes is at the foot of the mountains. It's quite a long journey to the famous sand dunes of Erg Chebbi but the transport is comfortable and air-conditioned and there is so much to see that time flies.
Your first stop after passing the surprise of Michliffen, a Moroccan winter sports and ski resort, is Ifrane, a picturesque small town known as the "Switzerland of Morocco" due to its alpine architecture. It was built in the Swiss style by the French during their occupation of Morocco in the 1930s.
A little further on is the beautiful town of Azrou, “The Rock” in the Amazigh language of the local Berbers. This area is home to mighty, aromatic cedar forests where you will encounter the legendary “Barbary apes”, a type of macaque. They can be quite curious and friendly, but be careful they don’t run off with your bag!

As you continue across the high plateau, the peaks of the High Atlas, said to support the sky, slowly come closer and then you cross the pass to Midelt and on to the edge of the Saharan town of Rissani. From there it is just a short hop south to Merzouga where the impressive dunes of Erg Chebbi suddenly appear on the near horizon.

These dunes stretch east into Algeria and are superb examples of their type, the highest towering over 50 metres above the spectacular desert landscape around them. Your hotel is at the foot of the dunes, where you can relax and enjoy the evening after your trip. You will be treated to a carefully prepared traditional Berber dinner and sleep in a comfortable bed while listening to the sweet sounds of Berber music.

Don't forget the large covered market, which is a feast for the senses with its spice baskets, its colorful stalls of olives, its mountains of oranges and its heaps of fragrant mint. Lunch at a Moroccan restaurant.

After lunch, we continue our journey to Volubilis to visit the 2000 year old Roman site. There you will have free time to explore the site and take photos before driving back to Meknes where you will spend the night in a hotel or riad.

Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse in the middle of the medina.

Day 02 :
Exploring the desert.

After your breakfast, you are free to spend the day at your own pace. There is plenty to do and see in the area. Do you opt for a strenuous and breathtaking hike through the dunes of Erg Chebbi? Or would you rather relax at the hotel and cool off with an ice cold drink and a dip in the pool? Some opt for a shopping spree in Merzouga town centre, where many local handicrafts are sold at much cheaper prices than in the bigger cities. You may also want to visit the nearby town of Khamalia, where the friendly black descendants of the old slaves from Sudan will delight you with their distinctive brand of Gnawa music.
Be sure to return to the base before sunset as your camel will be waiting there to take you on an unforgettable 90-minute excursion into the depths of the desert as you enjoy the magnificent sight of the sun setting in the desert sand. Then spend the night in an authentic Berber tent in a traditional camp, where your guide will personally cook you a delicious Moroccan meal and you will listen to the local musicians playing sweet melodies as you relax and fall asleep under the many twinkling stars and the huge, bright moon.

Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse in the heart of the Medina.

Day 03 :
Erg Chebbi Dunes – Tinghir – Todra Gorges.

Sunrise in the desert is just as beautiful as sunset, so set off at dawn as you ride your trusty camel back through the dunes that cast ever-changing shadows across the arid landscape. Breakfast is served at a hotel, and then it's off to the impressive Todra Gorge, a favorite with climbers who can often be seen scaling the steep 300m high rock faces like beetles. Then it's on to the cute little town of Tinghir, where you can do a bit of hiking or just relax. Dinner and overnight in the gorges

The Muslims of Andalusia, the Andalusians, fled Spain since the early 16th century and recreated the gentility of the cities of Muslim Spain in Tétouan. It has retained its Andalusian soul, making it one of the most Hispanic-Moorish cities in Morocco.

Visit the Souk El Hot, known for its beautiful pottery; the tanners' market or the fabric market where Rif women, dressed in traditional costume, sell their red, white and blue striped fabrics, typical of the Rif. Don't miss Hassan II Square (FEDDANE), the Royal Palace, built in the 17th century and restored in the 20th century. Lunch in Tétouan before heading to Tangier, where we will spend the night in a historic place built by the Eastern Telegraph Company in the Kasbah district.

With the development of the telegraph, the English connected Tangier and Gibraltar by a telegraph cable. They built the current building in 1884 to set up their offices and receive their guests.

Day 04 :
Todra Gorges – Atlas Mountains – Fes.

After breakfast, you will drive back to Fes through the Middle Atlas Mountains. You will be dropped off at your accommodation in Fes.
